Our childhood care experiences, economic and social backgrounds, and even the gendered approaches to solutions and leadership styles have profound effect on development of sustainable awareness in our lives.

During my research, I also discovered something striking: In our patriarchal society, nature is treated symbolically like women. Masculine traits are seen as more valuable, leaving both the feminine and the environment undervalued and exploited. Women, too, internalize this societal logic, taking on the role of caregivers at the expense of their own energy and emotional resources.

But this is not what empowered femininity is about. Empowered femininity means embracing:

The ability to receive and honor your self-worth.
Setting boundaries for your energy and resources.
Living in joyful presence, rather than constant sacrifice.

It’s about rejecting the idea of being an emotional “dumpster” for others—just as nature has become a dumping ground for human waste.

Let’s change our femininities and masculinities and with them our relationship to the environment. We need ecological femininities that don’t self-sacrifice. And ecological masculinities that honour their bodies, emotions and relationships.
